Right now the link to "Private Messages" is under "Your Stuff" and any new private messages aren't visible unless you first click on the "Your Stuff" link (which i don't do often). Any new PMs are hence unnoticed.

It would be better if the "Private Messages" link (which also shows the number of new messages) is visible prominently beside the logged in user name. That way, any new PMs are easily noticed.
