Possibly incorrect apache configuration for Nexus group and repository urls

There is some strange behaviour in Nexus when trying to access a repository group, using the "repositories" url.
For example, compare these two URLs
(1) https://repository.jboss.org/nexus/content/groups/public/org/jboss/maven/plugins/maven-injection-plugin/1.0.2/
(2) https://repository.jboss.org/nexus/content/repositories/public/org/jboss/maven/plugins/maven-injection-plugin/1.0.2/

The first one works fine, the second one returns 404 errors when trying to download any of the files. I checked with Sonatype about whether this is expected behaviour in Nexus, and according to them, it's an Apache configuration issue.
