Re-indexing should be done asynchronously

    Description

      The current re-indexing behavior is to perform it synchronously. This may be fine for small repositories, but for medium/large repositories this isn't realistic, because the startup time would be dramatically increased, making the repository seem "unresponsive" (such an example was encountered in MODE-1793)

      I think we should change the re-indexing to be done asynchronously.
