On Mac there are limitations to use VPE (see mail thread started by Burr Sutter on 18/12/2013 "Eclipse on Mac OS X Mavericks") :

Yes, that's our limitation on mac currently:
a) you want VPE => you have to use 32bit eclipse => you have to use java 1.6
b) you don't need VPE => you can use 64bit eclipse => you can use java 1.7
