Migration Guide: migrating global valves vs. migrating jboss-web.xml valves

XMLWordPrintable

I think we should do a bit of content reorganization around migrating valves. The reason is that you can define valves on two places: in the web subsystem (so called "global valves") or in the jboss-web.xml file.

If you define valves in the web subsystem, then migrating that is a part of migrating server configuration and the informations should be provided in chapter 4.4. Web Server Configuration Changes.

On the other hand, if you configure valves in jboss-web.xml, then migrating that is a part of migrating the application and the informations should be provided in chapter 5.14. Migrate Valves.

Current state is rather confusing. Chapter 4.4. Web Server Configuration Changes has nothing on migrating global valves, it only has chapter 4.4.2. Migrate JBoss Web Rewrite Conditions about rewrite conditions – but I understand that migrating global rewrite valves is very similar. At the same time, chapter 5.14. Migrate Valves has a lot of content that is universal (e.g. the table 5.1. Mapping Valves to Handlers), then some content that exclusively applies to server migration (it even mentions the migrate operation!) and then little content about valves from jboss-web.xml (e.g. chapter 5.14.3. Migrate Valves Configured in Deployments).

When fixing (= putting global valves migration under chapter 4 and leaving only jboss-web.xml valves under chapter 5), I guess that some content will have to be reused. Linking between chapters 4 and 5 should IMHO be avoided.
