Drilling into Camel details on a ServiceMix process in JMX Explorer results in flickering loop

Start a ServiceMix process with KARAF_DEBUG=true in a seperate console window (not IDE). The server should be running some Camel bundles - mine is running https://github.com/FuseByExample/smx-ws-examples
Go to JMX Explorer view, and double click on the Apache ServiceMix process under local processes.
Drill into the Camel section. The JMX Explorer flickers the Local Processes tree open and closed, while the Properties views flicker between the Property and Search box modes.
The Diagram view attempts to draw the Camel tree, but fails to lay it out , and keeps repositioning nodes before eventually settling down, while the other views keep flickering.

The unix console from which the IDE was started logs the following repeatedly

Mouse pointer keeps switching between arrow and loading circle.
Closing the JMX Explorer window stops the flickering of the proerties view, background console logging.

There are no messages logged in ServiceMix to indicate anything unusual is going on.
