editing the Endpoint URI from, say, file: to timer: to mq: to activemq should update the icon on the diagram; but it doesn't

I think we need to force recreation or update of the icon name if the URI changes on an endpoint. The icon changes if we change the URI of an endpoint in the XML and round trip though; but would be nice to be able to show the icon changing when a URI is edited from the Properties view
